If it’s catch-up TV you want, FORGET IT,
Re Samsung TV UE32D6530
Lovely picture especially in HD – really good. Sound quality is fine too from what must be very small speakers given the ultra-slim line nature of this LED TV. That this TV offers 3D and simulated 3D (i.e 2D to 3D conversion) was an added bonus and a novelty. The main reason I went for this model is because I was assured that all manner of catch-up or on-demand TV was accessible by virtue of the integrated fully functional web browser supported by Flash player BUT such assurances proved to be wholly misleading and this was a huge disappointment to me! I am also unhappy with the You Tube app provided with this TV.

After having watched BBCi-player on a friend’s LG Smart TV, I made enquiries at several large electrical retail stores asking whether any of the so-called internet televisions they sold had the ability to play, in addition to BBCi-player, other brands of catch-up television such as itv-player. In two branches of Currys, a branch of Comet and a PC World store, I was told that certain Samsung models came with a full www internet browser and some type of Flash player installed enabling the viewer to watch catch-up or on demand TV from all the sites, including itv-player, 4oD, BBCi-player and Demand 5.
I wanted to buy a television with a 32″ screen with this functionality built in so I wrote to Samsung Customer Service and asked for confirmation that Samsung TVs with an integrated web browser enabled viewers to watch specifically itv-player and 4oD as well as BBCi-player which seems to be provided as a dedicated app in all the Samsung smart TV range. The reply I received from Linda (Customer reference number: 2114008321 Email response ID: 1104460095 ) said, “The only 32” television I can find for you that has a web browser is UE32D6530/6510.
You can check the specs of this set on our website.
ITV player and 4oD is available in the UK. You can download the app once the
tv set is connected to the internet successfully.”
Now, the UE32D6530 is quite an expensive set, so I searched on-line to compare prices at different outlets. I also wrote to one on-line supplier, namely 1st Audio-visual, under my wife’s name, elisaid, and asked for confirmation that it was possible to watch itv-player, Demand 5 and 4oD on this television and the answer I received was in the affirmative as you can see by visiting http://www.1staudiovisual.co.uk/catalog/samsung-ue32d6530-full-p-104306.html
Next, I visited the John Lewis Department Store in Nottingham as they offer a five year guarantee on all televisions and claim never to be knowingly undersold. Here the two salesmen to whom I spoke independently confirmed that the UE32D6530 by virtue of its full internet browsing capability and in-built flash player enabled one to watch any type of catch-up TV, including itv-player. They even told me that it was so much better than the internet browser in the Sony TV because that lacked Flash player software and as a result could not play videos from the internet but merely display text! Now, thoroughly convinced of the Samsung television’s capability in this regard I placed an order for the UE32D6530 with John Lewis on-line and the set was delivered last week.
I have cable broadband from virgin media with pretty much the fastest download speed available in Nottingham, averaging just under 10MB. This is significantly faster than Sky’s so called up to 20MB superfast broadband which realises actual download speeds of 6.2MB in this postcode area! I had no problem connecting my new Samsung TV to the internet, both wirelessly and via the LAN connection (ethernet cable). BBCi-player worked flawlessly using the dedicated free app in the app store. However, inspite of all of the assurances and promises that I had been given prior to purchase, I quickly discovered that the other catch-up TV services did not work properly or did not work at all. Sure, I could navigate to the itv-player.com website and select a programme to view. It would then take me to the page for that programme but it would not fully load and just hung there indefinitely. I had more success with 4oD and Demand 5 but they were slow to load, failed to stream correctly and would stop working for no apparent reason. I then visited the BBCi-player website via the www browser (as opposed to using the dedicated app). On selecting a programme to watch, the page loaded, including the play icon but the programme kept faultering, stopping and starting and each time it re-started the volume was excessive and had to be turned down. Quite clearly, there is a difference in viewing BBCi-player with the app and tring to view programmes accessed through the web browser. The former method works well, the latter is hopeless.
My next step was to search the app store to see if there were dedicated apps for itv-player, Demand 5…

Samsung UE32D6530,
Recently purchased after seeing What HiFi group test. Set is very good and a very suitable alternative to the main plasma set. Cannot comment on 3D picture as no glasses were purchased with the set but if the 2D picture is anything to go by, it should be very good.
The purchase from Amazon showed a good saving compared with other sources.
