i always do way too much research before buying anything technology related, and this TV is no exception. Having spent 3 hours trying every 3D configuration there is (LG cinema vision, panasonic, samsung and sony shutter glasses) 3D really is not ready for prime time yet, there are too many compromises and expense in all but the LG case. as soon as i realised that 3d really wasnt something i needed, i then began to hunt out the best 40 or 42″ set i could. Its remarkable how much cheaper non 3D sets are at the moment. The other big requirement was connectivity, and this set really doesnt let down in this area.

So whats good, the picture is amazing, seriously amazing, watching Coast on BBC HD demonstrates just how good the upscaling is on this set, its easily comparable with any native 1080p Blu Ray disc and utterly jaw dropping, as impressive is the performance with SD content (Normal non hd-tv) lets face it, a lot of viewing will be done using this resolution and again, the processing is outstanding, no smearing or pixelation, even with lots of action going on. Next up connectivity, this set offers most of the samsung smart tv features, it DOES NOT support timeshift – pause and replay live tv OR and sort of recording television, definitely a nice to have but not a deal breaker. It does an excellent job of playing content from USB hard drive (although you may need a long usb cable or somewhere to prop your drive due to the location of the connection) playing back videos from the drive is excellent, although DivX support is limited, mkv files play great bizarrely it plays everything my PS3 wont play, so im quite happy.

the biggest moment of surprise (having watched iplayer on a wii and ps3 for the last couple of years) is the iplayer app, at first look it seems a bit low res (the interface) but playback, as long as your internet connection can take it, is stunning, im not sure how they do it, but it seems flash has been taken out of the equation, my kids wanted to watch chuggington and when i queue it up and watched i stood there speechless for a while, outstanding quality.

all in all im very happy with the set, one word of warning, Edge lit LED tv screens are renowned for clouding (smudged patches on very bright scenes) this is fact of life on an LED set at the moment, my set is no different on bright white scenes there is a very slight smudged darker patch on the screen but you have to look hard to see it. It doesnt bother me at all and in some cases will settle with use. if this sort of thing bothers you then maybe look or something other than LED. Other than that i am a very happy customer i make this essential purchase if it fits your requirements (e.g. smart TV but no 3D)

i was a little apprehensive about having to buy a new tv after hearing so many good/bad points about led but decided to take the plunge and buy this tv. i must admit, i am really impressed. the picture is excellent – even though i am only viewing in standard def. i have watched several programs in high def (via i-player) & it really is stunning. was a little worried about the lack of instructions but there is a manual on screen which is really useful & even a techno phob like me has managed to work out everything i needed to within a short time. the sound is really good (considering the thinness of the set) – i was expecting to have to pay for audio system for it but even tho its a little hollow sounding, its more than adequate. connections are really good – 2 usb ports, 4 hdmi etc so plenty of options for connecting all your equipment. i havent tried out blue ray yet (waiting to pinch the kids ps3!!) so cant comment on that as yet. the internet features of this tv are quite limited at the moment – i-player, ilovefilm, facebook & a few others so buying a ‘dongle’ to use the internet side is rather expensive (ethernet cable might be cheaper option) but hopefully, samsung will upgrade these to include more features such as 4od, itv player etc. lots of features on a reasonably priced set so overall experience is excellent.

Make sure you have the latest firmware, 9 Aug 2011

I purchased this television primarily to watch HD content, on blu-ray and the Freeview HD channels. I was initially impressed with the quality of the television in this role however I was very disappointed to find that there was a problem when watching the BBC’s flagship high-def channel, BBC HD. Every so often the picture would momentarily flash a completely black, blank screen at you, annoying to the point where you would have to change the channel.

I discovered that this was due to the BBC experimenting with the way they broadcast the BBC HD channel. In spring of this year they started switching between a 1080i and 1080p picture on-the-fly, in order to provide a better quality 1080p image during slow-moving scenes of any given TV show. Contrary to the BBCs expectations this caused problems with some Freeview HD receivers, including those in some Samsung and Sony televisions.

I am pleased to say that the latest firmware update (1015) by all appearances has fixed the problem with the BBC HD channel (and saved me from packing up and returning the TV!). In light of this I am happy to give this TV a 5-star review, however I am deducting a star due to Samsung’s less than impressive customer support. Nowhere in the support section of the website did they acknowledge this problem, and the support staff on the helpline had no knowledge of this issue and had no idea if a fix was in the pipeline. So the firmware fix, welcome as it is, appeared out of the blue. Incidentally, the firmware can be updated either via wi-fi (assuming you have a wireless dongle in the TV), or by USB memory stick (having downloaded and transferred from your computer), or apparently, through spare bandwidth on the TV channel although I have not tried that method.
