Fantastic visual quality & depth, at a reasonable price, 28 July 2011

I recently purchased this Sony Bravia together with the Sony S380 blu ray player as it was on a promotional offer through Amazon.

Amazon as ever provided faultless service; ordered at 3pm on Friday and was delivered at 8am Saturday morning through my Prime subscription.

The TV itself is fantastic, with a vibrant colour range with crisp brights and deep (but not too deep) blacks. Some reviews that I read/watched prior to buying this had issues with screen bleeding, but on my unit I have not experienced this at all. SD picture quality is much better than I expected; my previous TV (granted it was a cheap 32″ AOC TV) was, in hindsight terrible, so I didn’t expect too much from this unit in SD, but it’s fantastic. I specifically wanted a TV with Freeview HD to watch the Formula One in the best possible way, and the quality of picture and audio is beautiful. The audio is vibrant with good levels of bass, all without any distortion or crackling.

I can only assume the previous reviewer has a bad unit (granted, he shouldn’t which is unfortunate). When I purchased this TV on Amazon, there were quite a few reviews and was about £50 more expensive only a few weeks ago, so I’m not sure if there has been some kind of listing error on Amazon’s part to merge or delete the other listing.

Excellent picture quality and all-around TV, particularly given the price. Does not feel like an entry-level TV at all. Both HD and SD content look good on this TV – I had a 46″ Samsung LCD in the US before moving to London, which I chose because of its great ability to display SD content, but this Sony surpasses even that one. Overall, an excellent purchase, and I don’t think I could have found a better HDTV at this price level.

With no previous reviews on Amazon for this item, took a bit of a risk on it. I mean its Sony, its Bravia, it’ll be good, won’t it?
    Unfortunately, not.
Compared to friend’s (more expensive) Sony Bravia’s this one is a bit of a dog. Its not actually aweful, just not very good.

Awesome service and delivery as always by Amazon is the highlight.

The TV itself is simple enough to get setup, tune in, and start using. Swivel stand is a nice touch. It looks good (turned off), has the usual raft of connectivity ports.
However, the picture quality is just poor. All non-HD feeds (such as Sky and Virgin) are very pixelated, grainy and just unpleasant to look at it. We spent quite a bit of time with the comprehensive options to fine tune the picture but nothing really improved it. Even HD isnt that good. Sound is worst, like (if you are old enough to remember) those cheap transistor radios from the 1970’s – very tinny. Again, no amount of twiddling with the sound controls improved it.

This is a Sony offering at the low end of the price range for a 40″ TV. It is a good example of “one gets what one pays for”. However, other companies such as Samsung and Panasonic are making decent TVs in this price range, and I am disspointed with this – Sony’s offering. The moral is, dont buy if the item doesnt have any reviews!
